If you’re not lucky enough to have a savvy mother or older sister then creating a good look with makeup can be a bit of a tricky proposition. It’s not a matter of dabbing on some mascara and hoping for the best: unless you like the street walker look of course. It’s not something you can do by reading about it either; it’s one of those skills learned by copying and doing rather than an ability you can pick up from a textbook.
So who can show you the best way to apply makeup then? Simples! There’s a vast army of do-it-yourself YouTubers out there who have created their own tutorials and these range from the ridiculous to the sublime. If you want my advice then take advantage of one of those viral how-tos and you should be in safe hands. And speaking of hands, make sure you take time to put nailpolish on. A rush job here just won’t do.
So what does it take for a video to go viral? Well there aren’t any hard and fast definitions, the video simply has to garner a lot of interest and generate discussion in a large number of people. Trying to quantify that can be difficult but when you consider a site like YouTube, the number of hits a video gets is a pretty good method.
Lauren Luke is a 27 year old UK-born accidental YouTube makeup guru. Her rise to fame started some years ago when the eBay makeup seller started fielding questions about how to apply her products. Lauren’s how-to makeup tutorials have certainly gone viral, receiving more than 34 million hits. Putting that in perspective; it’s a lot more hits than US President Barack Obama or the National Geographic receive.
Her lack of video editing skills actually work in her favour as it makes her unpolished tutorials feel less threatening and more of a girl-next-door. Plus, she has a gorgeous Chihuahua.
MICHELLE PHAN

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is great blog. A great read. I will definitely be back… Agular Anh
